At Sea In St. Paul

Opting for a break in continuity
the universe can go without another song about drinking.
Foreign landscapes become familiar paths.
Familiar faces just kind of fade.
Romantic notions of New York nights.
We'll grab the sky by the throat
and release it when dawn breaks.
We're all still here
but the line is so long.
We're all still here
we forgot what we were waiting for.
The view from the top is just more people.
Stifling coughs and shifting uncomfortably.
Is someone turning the music up
or are those just trumpets fading?

Ralph, I Can't See!

The light pours in to show these healthy relationships with alcohol poisoning.
Our eyes were wide once, singing songs we meant so goddamn much it hurt.
We were alive then.
Time moved on. We held our heads up 'till our necks gave way.
Time's still moving on. We're stacking bricks under our chins now just to see straight.
Before our minds completely numb, let's sing it loud so to remind us
life is still beautiful, incredible and terrifying.
Still speaking tongues and seeing double missing what we had
so long ago in the places we grew up in.
When we were young and claimed the basements and the backyards as our home.
We can close our eyes and wallow in nostalgia
but we know we'll miss these days tomorrow.
We can wake up breathing every new day in until our lungs blow out.
I wrote it down so many times.
It always sounds so simple.
I let it go.
Why don't I listen to myself?

I Read This In A Book

He settled for cocaine and third shift at the factory
working his ass off. Spending his money on grinding his teeth.
She was all legs, brown eyes and a little bit Native American.
Both stuck in nineteen-hundred and fuck all.
Children of the defeated sixties mentality of muddle minded give ups.
Doomed to a fate of apathy and nosebleeds.
She cried when the baby didn't.
He was reassured that god was real, and an asshole.
They both died that night.
Then went back to work.
A stone in his belly and a hole in hers.

He laughed. "Redemption? That's a funny thing.
Wait till tomorrow. See what the sun will bring."
Alone in silence. Dusk painted overhead.
Shrug and sigh and traverse back home again.
A night of blistering drunks howling mad.
Spinning circles. Falling flat.
"It's us against the world forever!"
Sworn allegiance through foaming mouths.
Drinking to oblivion or whatever else follows.
The skyline sinks into the swamp of the city.
This is home and always will be.
A protagonist?
Well, one can still hope.
Redemption?
Well, There's always tomorrow
